Gasparilla Island has been a family destination for generations — and it's easy to understand why. The island is safe, unhurried, and genuinely beautiful, with a range of activities that work for children of all ages and adults who want more than just a beach chair. The absence of chain restaurants, theme parks, and high-rise condos is not a limitation — it's the point. Boca Grande offers a different kind of family vacation: one built around nature, exploration, and the simple pleasure of being somewhere extraordinary.

Cycling the Island Path

The 7-mile paved bike path that runs the length of Gasparilla Island is one of the great family cycling experiences in Florida. The terrain is completely flat, the path is well-maintained and separated from traffic in most sections, and the scenery — Gulf views, swaying palms, and the occasional dolphin in the water — is genuinely spectacular. We offer Priority Coast belt-driven cruisers in adult and children's sizes, plus tag-alongs and trailers for the youngest riders. A family bike ride to the lighthouse and back is a Boca Grande rite of passage.

Golf Cart Exploration

For families with younger children, a golf cart rental is the perfect way to explore the island without the physical demands of cycling. Our 6-passenger Club Car Onward carts comfortably seat the whole family, with enough room for a cooler, beach chairs, and all the gear that comes with traveling with kids. Load up in the morning, drive to the state park, spend the day on the beach, and drive back for dinner — it's the quintessential Boca Grande family day.

The Boca Grande Lighthouse & State Park

Gasparilla Island State Park, at the southern tip of the island, is a must-visit for families. The park encompasses the historic Boca Grande Lighthouse (built in 1890 and beautifully restored), a wide stretch of Gulf beach, and a fishing pier over Boca Grande Pass. The lighthouse museum is small but genuinely interesting, with exhibits on the island's history, the tarpon fishery, and the lighthouse keepers who lived here for generations. Children love the lighthouse — it's a real one, not a replica, and you can walk right up to it.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding for Families

The calm, shallow waters on the bay side of Gasparilla Island are ideal for families with children who are ready for a water adventure. Our tandem kayaks are perfect for a parent-child team, and the mangrove channels are shallow enough that even a capsize is not a serious concern. Our guided family tours are specifically designed for mixed-age groups, with guides who are skilled at keeping children engaged and excited about the wildlife they're seeing. We recommend ages 6 and up for kayaking, and ages 10 and up for stand-up paddleboarding.

Local Tip: Book your family kayak tour for the morning. Children are more energetic, the water is calmer, and the wildlife is more active in the early hours. Our guides are experienced with children and know how to make the tour fun for all ages.

Shelling on the Beach

Gasparilla Island's beaches are among the best shelling beaches on Florida's Gulf Coast. The combination of the deep Boca Grande Pass and the island's position on the Gulf means that a remarkable variety of shells wash up on the beach, particularly after storms and at low tide. The beaches near the state park are the most productive, and the lighthouse beach at the very tip of the island is legendary among serious shell collectors. Bring a bag — you'll need it.
